My Family Tree on My Mother's Side-Petersen Line

Stanley J. Taylor's mother was Amanda Petersen.  Amanda's parents were Charles Louis Petersen and Anna Helm.  Charles Louis  Petersen was born in Hamburg, Denmark (which later became Hamburg, Germany) and he was in the German Merchant Marines.  He was in China during the Black Plague.  He sailed around the world about three times.  They settled in Dubuque in the 1800's, as did the Taylor line of our family.  When Charles Petersen settled in Dubuque, he worked for the Diamond Joe Steamship Line (or Packet Boat Line) as a ticket agent/bookkeeper.  Charles and Anna Petersen had five (?) children...Alma, Carl, William, Amanda, and maybe Lyla.

William Petersen loved the Mississippi River and wrote about it.  The following link gives background on William "Steamboat Bill" Petersen:  http://www.transportationheroes.org/heroDetail.php?id=16.  His book "Steamboating on the Upper Mississippi" started out as his doctoral thesis.

Fredericka Helm was mother to Anna Helm.  Mom thinks her husband's name was Frederick.

All of these relatives are buried at Linwood Cemetary in Dubuque, Iowa...on the entry road to the cemetary just before the first old mosoleum on your left.  Elaine Taylor Casteel Tippe's first husband Delbert Casteel is also buried in that area of the cemetary.
